I believe that all children should experience a variety of written text. In my classroom I have eight independent reading centers. Each day the children go to these centers and read indepently.

In the "Some-bunny Special" center, children will snuggle up with a stuffed bunny and will be reading special thematic books that have been read in class during social studies or science.
In the "Smart About Art" center, children will be reading about different artists as well as books that will teach them how to draw using a step-by-step approach.
In the "Hats Off to Authors" center, children will be reading books written by different authors. Each month an author will be featured so they can experience the works of different writers.
In the "Poet-Tree" center, children will be reading poetry. Several poets will be featured as well as many different kinds of poetry.
In the "Glow and Grow" center, children will be reading Non-fiction books. They will be learning facts pertaining to math, science, and social studies subjects.
In the "Reading is Magical" center, children will also be reading thematic books from the subjects we have been studying in our classroom.
In the "I Spy" center, children will be reading I Spy books and Look and Find Books. They love to search for the different objects.
In the "Picnic With A Book" center, children will lay out a quilt and snuggle up with some of the favorite thematic books that have been read aloud to them during classtime.
