Dear Parents,
September is a very exciting month as
the children return back to school. First, I want to welcome you to
room 173! I am so excited about the upcoming year. I look forward to
working with you to give your child an unforgettable, meaningful first
grade experience. As we start off the year, there are many things I
would like to bring your attention to:
Specials:
Monday- Music
Tuesday- P.E.
Wednesday- Music and Computer
Thursday- Library
Friday- P.E.
(Be sure to have your child wear tennis shoes for PE class.)
Snack:
Our lunch time is from 12:00-12:40 so
we will be having snack time every morning. Please send a healthy snack
with your child every day, for it's a long time between breakfast and
lunch!
Hot Lunches:
The cost of breakfast is $.75 and
lunch is $1.25, which includes milk. You can put money in your family
account by sending the money in with your child or taking it to the
Badger Clark Cafeteria or the Douglas Middle School Food Service
Office. A note will be sent home with your child when your account is
getting low. Milk for cold lunch costs $.25.
Birthdays:
Each child will have an opportunity to
celebrate his/her birthday during the school yar. If your child's
birthday falls in the summer moths, then we will celebrate in the month of May! If a birthday falls over a
weekend or holiday, we'll celebrate on the nearest school day. You are
welcome to send treats in on your child's birthday, but please remember
that only packaged treats are allowed. If you do plan on sending
treats, please phone or send a note to me in advance. We have 20
students at this time.
Transportation:
If there is a change in your child's
usual transportation from school to home or daycare, please remember to
send a note with your child or to call the office. Unless we hear
differently from you, your child MUST go home according to the usual
transportation plan. If you are picking your child up after school,
plase meet him/her at the school cafeteria and be prepared to show a
picture ID. If you are picking your child up early from school, you
must first stop at the office and sign him/her out before taking your
child from the classroom. Please be assured that these procedures are
only enforced to ensure the safety of your child.
Book Orders:
Book orders will be sent home the
first Tuesday of every month in your child's Tuesday Folder. Please
return the order the following Tuesday at the latest. Participating in
the book orders is optional; please do not feel obligated to order
books.
Homework:
One-three times a week your child will bring home a baggie with a book
in it. Please have your child read the book to you, sign the
sheet in the baggie and return it to school the following day.
Your child must be able to read four different sight word lists by the
end of first grade. The first list will be coming home in
September. Please practice the words at least 4 times a
week. I will send home some ideas for ways to practice to get you
going. When spelling starts, please practice your child’s
words during the week, too. Finally, we have a new math program
this year, called Everyday Mathematics, and there may be some homework
to go along with it.
Discipline:
Discipline is needed to ensure that
our room functions smoothly. We have both classroom and
school/playground rules to be followed. If rules are broken, I discuss
the matter with your child; appropriate in-room consequences will be
enforced. If rules are continually broken or a serious situation
occurs, a time out procedure through the Time Out Room will be used.
Communication/Tuesday Folders:
Every Tuesday, your child will be bringing home a Tuesday Folder. It may contain
notes or letters from the school and district, work samples, book orders, etc. Please empty the folder and send it back with
your child the next day. Be aware that some things can't
wait until each Tuesday to go home, so check your child's backpack nightly.
#1 Classroom Rule:
I will treat you with respect so in
turn you will know how to treat me. We all want to be treated with
respect and be people of good character. We will work on this rule all
year long and want everyone to feel they are safe and in a comfortable
place each day.
I truly feel that you are an equal
partner in your child's learning experience, and your thoughts and
feelings are valued and important to me. Please feel free to contact me
at any time with your questions or concerns. The school phone number is
923-0080, my cell/home phone number is 545-3086 and my email address is lsteever@dsdk12.net. As the saying
goes: Live, Love and Laugh Often!
