Program Philosophy
The Douglas School District Mission Statement is as follows:
We, the staff, students, and parents of the Douglas
School District, will provide a safe and orderly learning
environment. Individual developmental levels will be recognized
and challenged. Together, we will encourage individual uniqueness
directed toward responsible behavior and lifelong learning.
In following this philosophy, each child in
room 18 will be respected for their own unique abilities and
talents. The students will be challenged according to their own
levels and will have high expectations set for them in the areas of
academics and behaviors. The students will be provided with a
place where they can take learning risks without fear of failure.
They will be appreciated for all efforts they put forth. In Room
18 we learn from our mistakes and learn to try again if it
doesn’t work the first time.
The students of Room 18 learn to make choices
depending on their needs. Time is provided for discovery of new
tasks, using a variety of methods from concrete levels to the more
abstract levels. Children learn through a variety of approaches.
I try to provide for each different learning style be it visual
(seeing), kinesthetic (hands on), or auditory (hearing). These
three approaches to teaching help reinforce concepts using each childs
strengths.
You as a parent know your child better than
anyone else. I look forward to working with you to give your
child the best start possible. When we work as a team your child
will see how important education is to you and that in turn will make
it important to your child.
Our full day Kindergarten program
is a long day for your child. For this reason I need parent
cooperation in having students come to class prepared to learn.
To make learning easier for children they will need to have their basic
needs met. These needs include a good
night’s sleep, a full stomach, and a hug to start the day.
