A Day in the Life of a First Grader

Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.

Whole group picture
We start our day with whole group reading time. During this time we read lots and lots of stories and work on reading, written expression and spelling skills.
Then student's work in small groups. We practice written expression and spelling skills while writing stories of our own or rewriting stories we have already read.
Small group writing
After small group writing, it's time for centers. The students do all center activities on their own. The centers are a variety of hands on activities.

Guided Reading
During centers, Mrs. Glandt and Mrs. Haynes call students for guided reading. Guided reading allows the students to read and discuss stories are at their current reading level.
Math
Next it's lunch and then it's time for Math. The students enjoy a variety of hand on activities as well as Math worksheets.
After listening to Mrs. Glandt read a favorite story, the students write in their journal. Sometimes they write a response to the story and sometimes it's free choice.

Recess
Recess is next. All students enjoy the chance to have fun on the playground. We are lucky to have such great playground equipment.
Science and Social Studies cover a variety of topics centered on giving the students the chance to explore.
The students will often work in pairs or small groups to complete their tasks.
