*Literacy Block:
| 1)
Writers Workshop- Children write daily following a short mini lesson
focusing on a specific writing skill they can practice. They
write about whatever they choose at their own skill level then we
conference together about their writing. During our conference
skills can be reinforced and practiced together to help challenge
children individually. |
| 2)
Today's News- Each morning following our pledge we will be
interactively writing the news for the day. During this time we
focus on capital vs. lowercase, sight words, beginning and ending word
sounds, chunks within words, and ending punctuation. |
| 3)
Shared Reading- We will practice reading strategies,
comprehension, and print concepts through the use of big books, songs,
poems, fiction and non-fiction books, and pocket chart activities.
|
|
4) Literacy Centers- Children will work in small groups to practice
skills in writing, comprehension, word work, reading, and listening.
The children will complete 4 activities during the week which
focus in these skill areas. Friday will be a catch up/free choice
day where children can choose a free literacy center (white boards,
magnets, writing center etc.) while I help children work on individual
skills they need extra help with. |
|
5) Guided Reading- This also takes place during our Literacy Centers.
Children will read to me and practice application of reading
strategies and sight words on an individual level. The books they
are reading will then be sent home Friday in their reading folder for
further practice and need to be sent back to school Monday so a new
book can then go home. |
|
 |
Math:
|
1) Calendar- During this daily activity we review and practice skills
we are learning and have learned. Skills include how to read a
calendar, counting (1's,5's,10's), patterns, place value, graphing and
reading a graph, shapes, and ordinal numbers. Activities we add
later in the year include telling time, adding and subtracting,
counting money, and number building to 3 digits. |
|
2) Whole group instruction- Introduction of skills and then whole
group practice together on the skills we are working on. |
|
3) Flip Flops- Small group math centers to continue practice of
skills learned and skills we are working on. Children will
complete 2 centers a day 2 days out of the week. |
|
4) Games Day- Usually on Fridays we will learn a new math game
together to practice skills we were working on during the week.
Ask your child what game we played and have them teach it to you
for more practice. |

Other Activities We Do To Help Us Reach Our Learning Goals:
|
1) Handwriting- Neatness is always reinforced! These skills are focused
on throughout our day in the various activities we are doing. |
|
2) Oral Language Experiences- Children have a variety of opportunities
to practice speaking to a group and expressing themselves. They
do this during free play with friends, sharing during writing workshop,
authors chair, and book talks. |
|
3) Discovery- This is a time of free center exploration where children
choose activities of their own interest in a less structured setting.
This also gives them the opportunity to practice social skills
with their peers and independent problem solving. |
