DAILY WRITING:
Every morning when the chidlren come into the
classroom, they will be asked to write/draw about various topics.
Some days, they will get to choose a free topic, and some days
they will be asked to write about certain topics. Journals are a
part of our everyday routine along with writing during other projects.
LITERACY BLOCK:
Every morning we also have a block of time that is
set aside for reading and writing. Students complete one center
per day and four centers by Thursday that involve a variety of reading
and writing activities. One center is always teacher directed and
the other three are independent projects. Within these centers,
we learn the letters of the alphabet, their sounds, how to write them,
the Kindergarten sight words, and work on guided reading strategies
throughout the year.
GUIDED READING:
We will be using guided reading to practice
learning to read in Kindergarten. This is a teacher directed
activity that will help the children to practice reading from left to
right, reading one word at a time and pointing to each word, reading
color words, number words and Kindergarten sight words, and sounding
out words when they come to a new word. We will work on
strategies to use when they come to a word they don't know.
DISCOVERY CENTERS:
Every afternoon the children have the opportunity
to discover new centers that they choose to play in. The centers
include areas such as blocks, kitchen area, computers, literacy center,
science center, art and puzzles/games. They are free to go to any
area that is open and play as long as they want to in each area.
We spend about 30 minutes each day allowing the children to
discover these areas. The activities in these areas change quite
often to give the children a variety of experiences.
DAILY SPECIALS:
Each day the children will go to a special class
for 30 minutes. They will attend Music 2 times per week, PE 2
time per week, Computer once a week, and Library once a week. We
also get to have a special Art time for awhile during the year.
We share an Art teacher and take turns with Vandenburg and
Francis Case schools.
