Homework!

I support the belief that children who set aside time for homework each day are forming essential habits that develop responsibility and a value of education at an early age.  Ten minutes of homework per evening is an appropriate amount of time for a First grader. Children need time to play and relax!

Ideas for Homework!

Read!  Read!  Read!- Read to your child or have them read to you!
Bag Books- Your child can read these books and return each day for a new book.
Flash Cards-Help your child make flash cards and practice the Dolch High Frequency Words.
Writing- Have your child write letters, grocery lists, notes, cards,  Research supports that the more writing a child does the better reader they will become.
Spelling- Remind you child to practice their spelling words several times each week.
Math-Practice addition and subtraction facts.  Make some flash cards!  Practice counting money.  Help them add up how much change you have in your purse or pocket.
Games-Enjoy a board game together.  Games are a great way for you child to build problem solving strategies and also social skills.
Language-Spend time just visiting with your child.  Research also supports the belief that children who have a strong language background are often times more proficient readers and writers.

The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow.  The Rainbow won't wait while yo do the work.
