Reading:

Reading approaches that are implemented in Room 10 include:

Modeled Reading- The teacher reading aloud
Shared Reading-  The children read together with teacher
Guided Reading-  The child reads at their instructional level
Independent Reading-The child reads alone with little or no support from teacher

We read daily from Big Books, trade books, leveled books, basal readers, student published books and journals.

The Miracle of the Beginning Reader

"I move and I jiggle
And I rock upon my chair.
I wiggle my loose tooth,
And I twirl a strand of hair.

I chew on several fingers
And I sometimes on my thumb.
I tap the reading table,
Like I'd play upon a drum.

I kick my foot with rhythm
Lose the place where I should look
I rub my nose and clear my throat
And sometimes drop my book.

I look outside the window
And I look down at the floor.
I pay very close attention
When someone's at the door.

I close my eyes and rest my head
to daydream of all the things I need.
However, it spite of all of this
I'm learning how to read!"

Spelling:

The children in Room 10 choose their own spelling words from the Dolch High Frequency Word List and will progress through these lists at their own pace. Please look for your child to bring home their spelling words on a light blue sheet of paper. The list should come home on Mondays or Tuesdays depending on which day they go to the word study center. Please set aside time each week to study with your child.

Writing:

We love to write in Room 10!
Inventive SpellingWhen a child learns to speak they do not begin the process by speaking in grammatically correct or complete sentences.  Speech begins with sounds or approximations of words that may not be correct; however, the meaning is understood.  The writing process develops in much that same way and should also be accepted and understood.  Encouraging children to use inventive spelling will increase their confidence as writers and promote creativity.
The children are aware that their spelling may not be correct; however, in shifting the emphasis to writing and not correct spelling allows them to take risks and experience success as writers. As children become more familiar with letter sounds, word families and patterns their ability to spell words correctly will increase.
Free Journals- The children have the opportunity to write on any topic.  This is a daily activity.
Response Journals-The children respond in writing to a story they have read or one that has been read to them.  This is also a daily activity.
Writer's Workshop-I meet with each child at least once a week to discuss a book that they wish to publish.  This allows me to to work with them individually to introduce and/or practice writing skills and concepts. After working on a story, editing, and conferencing the children are allowed to "publish" their work. Their book is laminated, bound and then presented to them at our classroom publishing party held at the end of the year.

Praise the children and they will blossom!
