Guided Reading

Our school district encourages the implementation of Guided Reading, which is a reading program based on the philosophies of Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinell.
The following reading strategies are the basis of Guided Reading.  You may want to utilize them when reading with your child.
Remind your child to get his/her mouth ready to say the word by shaping their mouth for the beginning letter.
Remind your child to say the word S-L-O-W-L-Y using their finger to slide under the word.
Ask your child if the word looks like another word s/he knows. Example: Does bed look like red?
Ask your child to go on and read to the end of the sentence.  Often by reading the other words in context, the child can figure out the unknown word
If your child says the wrong word while reading, ask questions such as: Does it make sense?  Does it sound right?  Does it look right?
