ADJUSTED GPA FORMULA
Under the former system, student GPA was calculated in such a way that the 4.0 student taking fewer courses posted a higher GPA than a 4.0 student taking more courses. This was hardly fair. In order to compensate for this discrepancy, we have developed an ADJUSTED GPA formula. The formula adds an adjustment factor for credits taken above and beyond the minimum required for graduation. The formula will be used to determine valedictorian and salutatorian.
Follow the example below:
Standard GPA Calculation:
Standard GPA = Grade Points Earned / (Credits Earned x2)
(ex: 170 / (21x2) = 4.0476 GPA)
Adjusted GPA Calculation:
ADJUSTED GPA = Adjusted Grade Points Earned / (Credits Earned
x2)
(ex: same student as above: 170.90909/ 42 = 4.06926)
Calculating Adjusted Grade Points
Ex. 170 + ((21-19) * .454545) =
170 + (2 *.454545) =
170 + .90909 = 170.90909
| 170 | is your credit points earned. |
| 21 | is your credits earned |
| 19 | is the expected number of credits after completing 7 semesters. 16 is required to be a senior. 22 is required for graduation. Half way between 22 and 16 is 19. |
| .454545 | is the adjustment factor. See below for an explanation of this number. |
What is the Adjustment Factor?
(Max Possible Credits (32) minus Min. possible
credits at graduation (22)) divided by Min. Credits
(32-22)/22
10/22 = .454545 (Grade point value of each credit earned
above the required 22 credits)
