DOUGLAS SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

April 10, 2006

The Douglas School District No. 51-1 Board of Education held a regular meeting on
April 10, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. in the administrative offices of the Douglas School District, Box Elder, South Dakota. President Larry Larson presided. Those present were:

25800. President Larson called meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.

25801. Starr moved and Bowman seconded to approve the agenda.

25802. Bowman moved and Melendez seconded to approve Board of Education
Minutes of March 27, 2006.

25803. Melendez moved and Drouin seconded to approve the following Personnel Action:

G. APPROVE hiring the following certified staff for the 2006-2007 school year:

Wayne Holzer, Science Teacher, MS. One year only.
Replace: Holzer Interim Position
Supervisor: Lee Thomas


H. APPROVE the following certified transfers for the 06-07 school year.

Shawn Callanan, ESL Teacher, Carrousel.
Replace: Transfer back to full time ESL from 1/2 Spanish (MS)/ 1/2 ESL.
Supervisor: Joan Dunmire

Duane Wince from 5th grade VES to Language Arts teacher at MS.
Reason: Replace Abby Thompson
Supervisor: Linda Null/Lee Thomas

25804. Drouin moved and Melendez seconded to approve the purchases and issuing of Accounts Payable and Payroll as follows:

25805. Open Forum. Joan Dunmire addressed the Board regarding their invitations to attend Joe Hillberry’s Retirement Dinner on May 12, 2006.


25806. Bowman moved and Melendez second to approve request of Michael Poper to be released as Douglas Middle School Knowledge Bowl Coach for the 2006-07 school year, pending hiring of suitable replacement.


25807. Starr moved and Bowman second to approve request of Tom Willis to be released as high school head girls basketball coach for the 2006-07 school year, pending hiring of suitable replacement.


25808. Bowman moved and Melendez seconded to approval of Student Assignment Requests SA-06-47, SA-06-48 and SA-06-49 to attend Douglas for the 05-06 school year.


25809. Bonnie Harrison addressed the summer Community Library proposal. Hours would coincide with Open Gym, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from June 5 through July 26, contingent upon hiring a qualified employee. Starr moved and Melendez seconded.


25810. Starr moved and Melendez seconded to table discussion on Communications Procedures as per Special Board Meeting held on April 3, 2006, until the next Board meeting.


25811. Student representative, Lauren Dornin, Senior Class Secretary, thanked the Board for the opportunity to attend All-State Band. She shared that Prom/Post-Prom were both a lot of fun in spite of the nasty weather and the senior prizes given away were awesome. May 19 is Senior Breakfast, Awards and the Senior Slideshow. Graduation is May 21 at 2:00 p.m. The freshman and juniors are busy taking SAT tests and the seniors are ready to go!


25812. Superintendent’s Report.

a. Dr. Schmitz shared the tentative 06-07 school year calendar and added the February In-service was moved to November 17, to accommodate staff attending an Area In-service in Rapid City. He also addressed the proposed Meet and Confer Schedule. Starr will attend the April 18 meeting; Drouin the April 19 meeting, Melendez the April 20 meeting and all Board members will attend the May 8 meeting.

 

25813. Comments from Board Members.

a. Larson expressed being pleased with the positive responses received from the Board email sent on Friday, April 7.

b. Melendez issued an invitation for all to attend the Booster Club Spring Awards Banquet being held on April 20. Scholarships will also be awarded to seniors. The Booster Club is starting a new tradition with providing a dinner for each activity at the High School beginning with a spaghetti dinner for the track team on May 4. They will host dinners for all other activities beginning in the fall.

c. Drouin commented on the fantastic Math and Science Fairs held by the Middle School and the amazing projects provided by the students.
