Nobody really knows exactly when people started acting. It is beleived that the first performance was related to religous rituals to ask the gods for somthing. 534 B.C. is the first record of acted drama in Greece. In Greece they held a contest for best tradgedy of the year. A young man named thespis. He was honored as the first actor, enen though there were obiously actors before him if it was a contest. Thespis is the one that came up with the name thespian, which has been the name for all actors since.

| Actors didn't make a living out of acting they were normally either wealthy or had another day job. Actors also many times played the part of women and children as well as men. The actors also had to shout there lines and exaggerate there gestures so that everybody could see and here the play. The actors mainly used masks which covered the whole face. They needed assistants backstage to help change the masks and costumes. During the festivals the actors would act out three tragedies and one comedy. Then they would pick the best actor to be awarded a prize. This tradition has been carried out to today. |
