ACT Annual Test

Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, the state assessment for 11th grade students will be conducted through the ACT exam. Using the ACT for an assessment tests serves two functions:
  • It meets federal accountability requirements while also providing students with college admissions test scores.
  • Annually taking the ACT test for 11graders eliminate the need for students to take both the state test and one utilized for college entrance, course placement, and/or scholarships, reducing testing time for students.
  • BONUS: Taking the ACT multiple times ahead of graduating high school will likely improve your test scores showing the areas of strength and areas of improvement. 
 
On an annual basis, all public school districts in South Dakota will administer the ACT exams (English, Reading, Math, Science, and Writing) to all 11th grade students during the school day.

ACT Test Day 2026:
Wednesday, March 25 - Arrive by 7:50 AM Rescheduled date!
Monday, March 30th - Arrive by 7:50 AM

*If students and families know they will be gone on March 25th, please call the counseling office to make arrangements.

Who will take the test:
All Juniors, early graduates, and Juniors enrolled in the Distance Learning program
 
What to expect for test questions and time: 
  • English: 50 test questions; 35 minutes to complete
  • Mathematics: 45 test questions; 50 minutes to complete
  • Reading: 36 test questions; 40 minutes to complete
  • Science: 40 test questions; 40 minutes to complete
  • Writing: 1 test question; 40 minutes to complete
 
Allowable Items - Bring with you:
  • Acceptable photo ID (Driver's License or Douglas Student ID Card) or ACT Student Identification Form
  • Sharpened, No. 2 pencils and an eraser (NO mechanical pencils or ink pens)
  • A permitted calculator - Learn more about permitted calculators. 
  • Optional - An ACT-approved bilingual dictionary (if using language supports)

Prohibited Items - Don't bring with you: (unless authorized as an accommodation)
  • Do not bring any electronic device other than a permitted calculator.
    • Do not bring a cell phone, smart glasses, smart watch, fitness band, media player, iPad, headphones, and camera, or any device with recording, WiFi internet, communication, or calculator capabilities.
  • Textbooks, notes, dictionaries (unless approved by the test administrator for translations), or other aids.
  • Highlighter pens, colored pens or pencils, or correction fluid/tape.
  • Reading material  Note: Only school/district-owned and managed testing devices may be used for testing online.
How to Prepare for ACT Test Day:
  • Show up ready! Arrive by 7:50 AM!
    • Get a good night's sleep
    • Eat breakfast the morning of the test
