Advanced Placement Courses
Taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Douglas High School allows students to challenge themselves academically while still in high school, preparing them for success after graduation.
What are the benefits of Advanced Placement?
- Save Time and Money: Strong AP Exam scores may help students earn college credit, advanced placement, or both before starting college. This can open up room in college schedules for electives, majors of interest, internships, or even early graduation opportunities. Many students entering four-year colleges begin with college credits already earned through AP coursework.
- Stand Out to Colleges: AP courses demonstrate a student’s willingness to take rigorous, college-level coursework in high school. Colleges and universities often look favorably on students who challenge themselves through AP coursework and exams.
- Prepare for the Future: Research shows students who participate in AP courses and exams often experience greater success in college. AP courses help students develop valuable skills such as time management, critical thinking, academic writing, problem-solving, and independent study habits that will benefit them in high school, college, careers, and beyond.
- AP Course Rigor: AP courses are designed to mirror introductory college-level classes and allow students to explore subjects in greater depth while still receiving support from their high school teachers.
- AP Exams: Students enrolled in AP courses have the opportunity to take the corresponding AP Exam each May. Exams are administered during a two-week testing window. Whether students are taking their first AP class or completing several AP courses during high school, participating in the AP Exam process provides valuable experience and potential college benefits.
