Information Regarding School Closure and Continuing Education

Douglas Families,

March 13, 2020 – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem directed public schools to be closed March 16 - 20, 2020. Since this request is coming from the Governor’s Office, school districts are waiting for guidance from South Dakota Department of Education and The Governor’s Office as to how districts will count these days for instruction purposes. As soon as we have an update, we will inform families.

In the meantime, below is our guidance for instructional practices. If the closure of schools is extended, we will communicate additional instructions. Please read comments (on Facebook) for specifics.

HS and MS-
**Principals have sent instructions through email and google classroom to maintain as much consistency in instruction as possible. Please refer to those emails for contact information, login guidance, and instructional expectations.

Elementary-
**Read for 20 minutes
**Practice math facts- counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
**Play board games
**Write in a journal

In addition, many companies are offering FREE online services during these closures. Here are some ideas that are available:

In Douglas School District, we will continue to protect and inform our students, parents, teachers and the broader community by following guidance of our local, state, and federal health officials. Douglas Administration will continue conversations and planning during these closures discussing items that might be further impacted if closures are extended. Some items include:
**How to provide technology to those in need to ensure equitable access to instructional materials.
**How to provide meals to families in need of food assistance.
**Any additional items that may be affected for longer closures.

We appreciate our staff and families understanding as we work to address concerns and continue to plan for the impacts COVID-19 will have for the Douglas School District.
