The Douglas School District is fortunate to have Ellsworth Air Force Base as part of our extended community. nearly half of our students are dependents of military members. At DSD we pride ourselves on our excellent students and dedicated faculty and staff. So we welcome you into our DSD Family. currently Douglas schools has about to 2800 students and of those about 40% of those students are military and pack to make everybody feel welcome and all the teachers are really good it's a good environment I learned a lot more here than I did at my old school I don't remember much of my old school and not tell you so that tells you something military-friendly have school district for those students knowing that some of those students may experience differences with curriculum then they may have different experiences that they bring in with him as far as classes so what can we do to ensure that those students have the easiest transition possible so the Douglas School District with the Ellsworth Air Force Base since its Inception in the 1950s and 60s and because of that we have a great level of experience educating military soon as we connect our military students with other students to help them get used to the population at the facilities within our district we work at our high school level to make sure transcripts are articulated and students are not in jeopardy of losing any credit program which stands for student-to-student so in all of our buildings we have a group of teachers and students that kind of has set up a process that is specific to their building so when we receive a new student what does that welcome look like they take the students on a tour of our building I introduced him to some common practices whether that be the one true more the library the playing Ground that's always an important aspect in students life just how do I make friends in a brand new school student is a Puritan like on a student-level you don't have to talk to an adult it's all your grade and above like around you and it's a program for all kids who are new we try to help military kids because the new transition to a quarter go out there like maybe state given their schedule and if our schedules match-making take our schedule and we introduced ourselves as a student member last year I had a couple students in a couple of my classes and I knew them already on a personal level. We just make sure that they knew about to do because we do activities with them like note make them feel comfortable and additional program that we do have is anchored for life and anchor for life has more specific programming for elementary students we offer that in a couple of our building and what anchor for life does for military students is we design groups or sessions based around conflicts they might be having whether it's their parents on deployment or they've just PCS to our school district I may be leaving our school district so they're able to come together and talk and collaborate with students were experiencing the same thing and start to build that community and social groups to support each other it's actually rather than so this is the only School in South Dakota that doesn't but so what we do is we help the community we do some service projects like last year we did feeding South Dakota help we volunteer for that and I think we're doing that again this year in April their purpose is to help to help out the environment not even not just in the school but outside the school last year when did the food drive I was like hello hello 4 and we were sitting out there with like hats on like multiple sweatshirts in Appleton like putting food in electronics that is really fine and we also gave welcome kit moving kids together kit and play make it so it has like a Family Guy book in it there is movies to watch there is a journal I believe and there's a whole bunch in the welcome kit I know there's a whole bunch of school supplies and and the other kids they are a teddy bear his name is cuz he cares and he has patches because he's resilient Vina Douglas I haven't had a very good opportunity of being around a diversity of people from military kids to people who live and it's definitely a new transmission and I think it's a really great school I think the Douglass student population is the most unique and amazing in the state of South Dakota they're very diverse group they're very welcoming and accepting group they bring a world life experience that most adults don't experience in their lifetime and because of that they have different backgrounds they have different levels of acceptance of one another they have different expectations for what a good and loyal friend is they're willing to work hard and I just am so impressed with the military population that's one of the reasons that I stayed for 23 years is because we have a pride in our student body and they have a pride in themselves and that's exciting for us
