October 13 - High School Gas Leak

Douglas High School evacuated students and staff to the stadium Tuesday, October 13, as a precaution while responding to a potential gas leak.

The district worked with the gas company to assess the situation. Gas service to the high school building was shut off, and officials confirmed there was no safety threat to other school buildings or the surrounding community.

Due to the length of the assessment on Tuesday, the district dismissed high school students only for the remainder of the day. All other school buildings continued operating as scheduled.

As a result of the assessment and the length of repairs needed, classes at Douglas High School are canceled Wednesday, October 14, and Thursday, October 15. All other Douglas School District buildings will operate as normal, and all high school staff are expected to report to work as usual.

Students had an opportunity to retrieve their backpacks and personal belongings from classrooms and lockers on Wednesday, October 14, from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

Information regarding the status of scheduled activities for the week will be shared directly with participants and athletes by coaches, advisors, or the Douglas High School Activities Office. Contact the Activities Office at 605-923-0039 for specific information.

Douglas School District thanks families, students, and staff for their patience, understanding, and cooperation as the district works through this unexpected interruption. The safety of students and staff remains the district's top priority.

We will update you on the status of Douglas High School no later than Thursday at 3:00 PM concerning school on Friday, October 16.
