UPDATE: Douglas High School Gas Leak Repairs and School Schedule
What began as a potential gas leak on Tuesday at the high school resulted in an early dismissal and the cancellation of classes for the next two days. Following a full assessment, we learned that the repairs needed to restore gas service to the high school were extensive.
At this time, we have had three separate companies, more than 28 individuals, and at least 12 large pieces of equipment contribute to safely completing the necessary repairs. Gas service and heat are expected to be restored by midday on Friday, October 16.
As a result, classes at Douglas High School will remain cancelled on Friday, October 16.
Please note the following schedule updates:
- Other School Buildings: All other Douglas School District buildings will operate as normal.
Friday, October 16, is an early release day - children are dismissed 2 hours earlier than the normal scheduled time. - DHS Staff: All high school staff are expected to report to work as usual.
- DHS Friday Activities: All DHS after-school activities will take place as scheduled.
- DHS Saturday Activities: Activities scheduled for Saturday will take place as planned:
- Volleyball Tournament held at Douglas High School
- Knowledge Bowl at Rapid City Christian
We extend a special thank-you to MDU, Heavy Constructors, and Action Mechanical for their immediate response, dedication, and work to identify the problem and restore gas service. Their teams worked extended hours and traveled out of state to obtain the necessary parts and equipment to expedite the repairs. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment to our school community.
To our families and students, thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this unexpected interruption to our normal school schedule.
