Counseling Resources

Douglas School District values having counselors because they support the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally, and ensure every student has the support needed to learn, grow, and succeed. We employ 1 counselor at each of our elementary schools and 2 at our middle school and high school.

How do counselors help elementary-age children?
The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent, and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents, and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification, and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities, and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face.
Elementary school counselors hold a master’s degree and are required to have state certification in school counseling. Maintaining certification includes ongoing professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today’s students. Professional association membership enhances the school counselor’s knowledge and effectiveness.

How do counselors help middle school-age children?
School counselors support middle school students and families with age-appropriate social, emotional, and academic skill assistance. As a means of helping students become academically and socially successful, group and individual counseling services are available to all students. The emphasis of these services may include goal setting, critical thinking, relation to others, understanding self, organizational skills, and other student-centered needs. Here at Douglas, we also assist with our military-connected students by helping students navigate the changes that deployments and transitions can bring.

How do counselors help high school students?
Counselors support students’ academic progress, social-emotional well-being, and college and career readiness. This role helps students navigate course planning, graduation requirements, postsecondary options, and personal development while collaborating with staff, families, and community resources to help students succeed. Here at Douglas, we also assist with our military-connected students by helping students navigate the changes that deployments and transitions can bring.

Supporting our military connected-students:
Our counselors work to create an inclusive school environment and provide programs, activities, and services that support students through the challenges that can come with military life. By building strong partnerships with families and community resources, counselors help ensure students feel a sense of connection and belonging. Through these collaborative efforts, they support the academic, career, and social-emotional development of military-connected students.
